Missionaries and Linguistic Work
Missionaries provided an invaluable service in the
study of local languages in Africa and Asia. They authored grammar books,
compiled dictionaries and proverbs, and provided written forms for vernaculars.
In Ghana, J. G. Christaller's work on the Twi language, Johannes Zimmerman's
work on the Ga language, and J. B. Schlegel's work on the Ewe language
are prime examples.
